WHAT IS THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE?

Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009

The Volvo Ocean Race is the established jewel in the elite field of international yacht racing starting again in late 2008-09.

The race will thread a course around the planet taking in key economic and cultural centres.

The race provides global brand exposure through race media across TV, Press, Web, Radio and Mobile over the 9-10 month event period

The core Volvo Ocean Race audience is upscale with a higher than average representation amongst senior management and professional classes. As a networking event the Volvo Ocean Race is unparalleled. For example, Ericsson, who are already committed to compete in 2008, invited 4,000 key decision makers as hospitality guests in 2005-06, 80% Executive VP or above.

THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE 2008-2009

  • Established in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race.
  • Traditionally run every four years, due to its success in 2005-06, it will now start one year earlier on 4th October 2008
  • 9 months of racing, across 4 oceans, covering 33,000 miles
  • Visits around 11 major cultural and economic ports around the world.
  • In 2005-06, the new In Port Racing Series in all major port stops brought the racing action to the spectators and sponsors.
  • For 2008, a new race course will bring all of the action to new audiences in new markets
  • The Volvo Ocean Race is a unique mix of international sporting competition, corporate branding, and business to business networking
