Chieftain Yacht- The story so far
Yacht Chieftain
The Yacht Chieftain is a high tech Cookson 50 designed by world famous designer Bruce Farr and built by Cookson Boatyard in New Zealand. The boat is built out of carbon fibre and is incredibly light for its size. The boat is fitted with groundbreaking Canting keel technology, which gives the boat a quantum leap in performance.
The principle behind this keel technology is to place the keel fin on a hinge, which allows the entire keel to swing 70 degrees from one side to the other to as required. This reduces the heeling of the boat when under sail, thus increasing the performance, without the boat having to put on weight through water ballasts. The keel is swung or canted using hydraulic rams mounted inside the boat. This system allows the boat to be much lighter and hence faster.
